Doll

In her window,
she smiled to everyone.
the world before her was so kind.

All the people would walk by,
and look at her,
and everybody was so nice.
They'd sing,

Look at the pretty doll in that window,
mama.
Look how happy she looks today.
I want the pretty doll in that window mama.
Then they'd turn and walk away.
Walk away.

Ten years later in her window she stays,
her smile a little faded.
The world around her has totally changed,
she looks around and it's not long before,
the children sing.

Look at the toy guns in those windows,
mama.
Look at the bare-bellied dolls,
what is that ragged thing in that window,
mama?
Then they'd walk right along,
they'd walk right along.

This isn't what I'm used to, she cried.
I didn't move, I was here all the while.
How did this happen,
why didn't I ask why?
Why didn't I ask why...

And they'd sing,

la di da di da di dum,
da da di dum, (x5?)
